Should farmers use commercial fertilizer?

On the surface, banning commercial fertilizer seems like a terrible idea for all stakeholders in the agricultural sector. Farmers look to yield less, and the country might suffer food shortage, while the government collects less in taxes due to lower yield, as experienced in Sri Lanka. However, all things considered, it’s a move that, although posing a few challenges, is also necessary to avert dire consequences down the line.

Commercial fertilizers give as much as they take. They harm the environment and, by extension, all living things. They contain chemicals that can easily leach into waterways to contaminate water used for everyday activities, even when carefully applied. Nitrogen, a major component of commercial fertilizer, also contributes to the greenhouse effect, increasing global temperatures.

Moreover, the health implications are concerning. Studies have linked the chemicals in commercial fertilizers to an increased risk of cancer in adults and blue baby syndrome in children, a condition in which the baby literally turns blue and could die or go into a comma when fed with water contaminated with nitrates. This is caused by methemoglobinemia, whose growth is aided by the presence of commercial fertilizer in waterways. 

Beyond health concerns, the sustainability of commercial fertilizers is questionable. While they offer short-term benefits to farmers, they degrade soil quality over time, leading to erosion, long-term damage, and loss of fertility. On the other hand, organic alternatives like manure offer a more sustainable approach to soil fertility, preserving the health of the land for future generations and improving crop yield.
