Fact Box

  • Australia, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia are some countries that allow nudity on public beaches. In the US, only five beaches in four states allow nudity on beaches.
  • Naturism, also known as nudism, is a lifestyle and cultural movement advocating for and practicing social nudity in private and public spaces. It emphasizes respect for oneself, others, and the environment, promoting body positivity and freedom from societal norms regarding clothing.
  • Indecent exposure laws vary across states in the US but generally prohibit exposing one's genitals or engaging in sexual acts in public places.
  • In 2023, a children’s outdoor play area was scrapped in Seattle because it would be too close to the known nude beach at Denny Blaine Park, reserved as a “safe space for the LGBTQ+ community.”

With all the commotion in America surrounding freedom of choice, especially regarding sexuality, it's no surprise that this is an actual concern. Needless to say, public beaches should not even entertain the possibility of allowing nudity. As idyllic recreational spaces, they serve as a go-to destination for individuals, families, and people of all ages. As such, it is crucial to ensure they remain welcoming and comfortable for all to foster inclusivity and respect prevailing societal norms.

On freedom of conscience, the United Nations Office of the First Commissioner states: “There are no admissible limitations to this freedom, as long as personal convictions are not imposed on others and do not harm them.” In other words, while personal freedom is paramount, it should not supersede the collective comfort of the majority. Nudists can explore other options, including designated nude beaches or private resorts where they can be naked without infringing on the sensibilities of the general public.

Moreover, society, in general, still frowns upon public nudity, being viewed as a taboo in some places. Allowing it on public beaches risks offending and alienating the broader population. It also heightens the potential for conflicts between nudists and more conservative beachgoers, which can lead to discomfort and even harassment, compromising the overall beach experience.

Additionally, public nudity could potentially encourage predatory behavior and create an unsafe environment, undermining the serene atmosphere that beaches are meant to provide. Ultimately, public beaches are not just local gems; they are vital tourist attractions that boost the economy and support local businesses. Allowing nudity on these beaches may deter tourism, consequently harming the economy, especially the local businesses, and needlessly offend people.

Sam (Yes)

Nudity on public beaches challenges social norms and stigmas surrounding the human body. Allowing people to enjoy the beach in the nude reminds us that there is “nothing inherently sexual” about the naked human body. Similarly, nudity at the beach encourages an appreciation for the natural human body in its varying forms.

Surrounded by the confident displays of multiple body types, one can build an admiration for their body as part of this natural mosaic. Nude-friendly beaches are a beacon for personal freedom in self-expression because they empower people to choose what they wear or don't wear while enjoying their beach day. Choosing not to wear a swimsuit frees people from the stress involved in keeping up with the ever-changing swimwear trends. Instead, everyone is encouraged to be present and confident in their own skin while they immerse themselves in the beach experience.

Nude beachgoers are empowered to tailor their beach day to their aesthetic preferences by taking control of their sunbathing experience. Tanning nude is greatly beneficial for those who don't want to worry about pesky tan lines afterward. What’s more, beachgoers can enjoy the rush of skinny dipping without the burden of uncomfortable swim trunks bunching up or bikini straps falling down!

There is also the factor of cultural inclusivity. In some cultures, nudity at beaches is not taboo and is actually a normal part of beach culture. Allowing nudity at public beaches shows respect for the traditions of people from these cultures. With all of these things in mind, it becomes evident that allowing nudity at public beaches makes for a more meaningful and lively getaway.
