Fact Box

  • Concealed carry” is the practice of hiding a weapon, typically a handgun, on one’s person, but it requires a permit to do so. Some states require firearm safety courses before approving a license, while others only require certain qualifications
  • A June 2022 USA Today/Ipsos poll found that 69% of Americans favor stricter gun laws with less support coming from Republicans (50%) and more from Democrats (88%).
  • Statista reported in November 2021 that fourteen states and Washington DC require permits for concealed carry, while fifteen allow open carry without a permit.
  • According to a 2021 Pew Research study, 81% of US murders involved a firearm, which was the highest percentage since 1968.

Concealed carry is often touted as a solution to the country's very severe gun problem, but in reality, it does the opposite. To begin with, it complicates the gun problem by allowing even young people and mentally unstable individuals to carry concealed weapons. This is a serious concern, as it puts vulnerable people at risk and increases the likelihood of accidents and tragedies such as mass shootings, which are already a huge problem in the country.

It also cultivates a culture of fear since you never know who’s armed and who’s not. This may lead to a feeling of unease and anxiety, prompting people to carry firearms themselves just because everyone else does. This fear-based mentality is not healthy for society. Concealed carry also encourages escalation of conflicts, as people can resort to using guns in situations where they otherwise wouldn’t. Concealed guns aren't always that hidden, making it more like open carry. And openly carrying guns actually grabs more attention. It's also likely that in a situation where both parties are aware that the other is armed, conflict could escalate.

If not done correctly, concealed carry can also result in a gun accidentally firing. This is a concern because more than half of the states in the US allow gun ownership and use without permits or any formal gun training.

Lastly, a gun is only useful when used in the right situations, such as in self-defense. In the event of an emergency that necessitates a person to draw their firearm, however, concealed carry may make it considerably more difficult and slower to do so. Taking all of this into account, it’s pretty clear that, while concealed carry has some advantages, it’s not America's solution.

In many nations worldwide, the issue of concealed carry legislation is hotly debated. While some contend that permitting people to carry concealed weapons can only lead to tragedy, there are also numerous advantages to these kinds of laws. It also provides much more protection for citizens than gun restrictions or outright bans do. Criminals still break laws, but citizens can be prepared when they do.

Deterrence is one of the main advantages of concealed carry legislation. When they are aware that citizens may be carrying weapons, criminals are less inclined to commit crimes as there is a higher possibility of being apprehended or hurt by an armed citizen. Increased training is another advantage of concealed carry legislation. A concealed carry permit requires extensive training and instruction in safely using and handling guns.

Yet another advantage of concealed carry legislation is quicker reaction times. People who are carrying hidden weapons can react swiftly and efficiently in the case of a violent crime or terrorist attack, perhaps saving lives and lessening the overall damage of the incident. A fourth advantage of concealed carry legislation is often found to be decreased crime rates. According to studies, regions with more lenient concealed carry laws usually had lower violent crime rates than regions with stricter regulations.

Finally, regulations prohibiting concealed carry are especially helpful in defending people who are typically seen as society's most defenseless and physically weakest members, such as women, the elderly, or those with disabilities. Criminals frequently target these people as they’re seen to be easy pickings, but thanks to legislation allowing concealed carry, they are better equipped to protect themselves and discourage possible attacks.
