‘Early gender-affirming care is crucial to overall health’: Is Biden admin right?

Fact Box

  • On March 31, 2022, President Biden announced via Twitter, “To everyone celebrating Transgender Day of Visibility I want you to know that your President sees you [and to] parents of transgender children, affirming your child’s identity is one of the most powerful things you can do to keep them safe and healthy.”
  • The HHS Office of Population Affairs released a document “Gender-Affirming Care and Young People” asserting that “early gender-affirming care is crucial to overall health and well-being as it allows the child or adolescent to focus on social transitions and increase their confidence while navigating the healthcare system.”
  • A February 2022 Gallup report says LGBTQ identification in the US has ticked up to 7.1%, up from 5.6% in 2021 and 3.5% in 2012, with nearly 21% of Gen Z identifying as LGBTQ. Bisexuality was the most common sexual identity claimed among LGBTQ Americans, coming in at 57%.
  • Pew Research Center reported in a February 2022 poll that 38% of American adults say that “greater acceptance of people who are transgender is generally good for our society, while 32% say it is bad and 29% say it is neither good nor bad.”
  • On March 28, 2022, Governor Ron DeSantis signed the “Parental Rights in Education” bill that opponents have labeled “Don’t Say Gay” bill, which bans classroom instruction from teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity to kingergarten through third grade students.

Curtice (No)

The Biden administration's release of documents supporting gender “reassignment” surgery, puberty blockers, and hormone therapy for children, calling the procedures 'crucial' for the health of kids and teens who identify as transgender, is troubling, pseudoscientific nonsense that is undoubtedly abusive toward children

Perhaps the most disturbing and crucial word in these documents is 'early.' It's impossible to physically 'reassign' someone's sex. Attempting to do so produces outcomes that are more harmful than good. Various research on the subject, such as the most thorough follow-up of 'sex reassigned' people conducted in Sweden and extended over 30 years, reveals how many in the study maintained life-long unrest over their 'transitioned' bodies. According to the study, 10-15 years after surgical sex 'reassignment,' the suicide rate rose 20 times that of their peers.

Unfortunately, if an adult wants to head down the sex-reassignment path, they are free to do so. But to subject children to such life-altering procedures is unconscionable. Even the Obama Administration's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services concluded in 2016 that 'there is not enough evidence to determine whether gender reassignment surgery improves health outcomes.' These are children, not lab rats.

As Texas officials have declared, life-altering 'sex-change' procedures on children are comparable to child abuse. That is hard to argue against, as the evidence is in: 'transitioning' procedures don't help mental health. The White House's stance on this is not about science or preserving anyone's lasting health, especially the health of America's most vulnerable population. It is about preserving the overall health of and promoting the trans agenda from the top down in America.

Tyler (Yes)

The Biden administration's decision to emphasize the importance of early-affirming care will prove to be crucial for years to come. This will lead to a better understanding of transgender and gender-diverse youth and hopefully allow them to be more comfortable in their own skin.

LGBTQ youth will have more access to mental health resources. LGBTQ youth are three times more likely to harm themselves than non-LGBTQ youth. This investment in resources will hopefully promote a better overall understanding of what these children are going through while shedding the stigma that is often attached to it. These children may not feel comfortable seeking help from a parent or teacher and will now have a much more qualified outlet to speak about their feelings.

Gender-affirming care will now be part of trauma-informed care, which will not allow providers to bill it as malpractice. The new bill plans to outline what specifically constitutes appropriate transitional treatments for adolescents. Research shows that when these adolescents promptly receive the necessary treatment, they aren't as prone to struggle with some of the mentally adverse effects normal among LGBTQ youth.

These new policies unfolding under Biden's administration will also combat anti-transgender bills that can arise in the future. Having such laws already in place creates some form of a backbone that will be hard to take down in the future. The Biden administration's decision to make this a priority will lead to the normalization of LGBTQ rights now and for future years to come.
